Macquarie Heads Expansion Project

3 October 2017

West Coast Council is progressing plans to investigate expansion of the camping ground at Macquarie Heads, outside of Strahan.

“The existing Camping Ground provides good grassed sites next to the Harbour and is suitable for tents, caravans, campervans and motorhomes.  There is a boat ramp, public toilet and dump point available in the area,” West Coast Mayor Phil Vickers said.

“The area is in strong demand and Council sees potential to create more camping sites which will enable more people to enjoy this part of our region.”

Council currently manages 97 sites under a portion of land leased from the State Government, with some day camp areas also available.  With the lease between Council and the State Government due for renewal in 2019, Council is taking this opportunity to plan for the future management and development of the Macquarie Heads Camping Ground.

At a Council meeting in April, Councillors unanimously accepted a recommendation regarding operation of the Macquarie Heads Camping Ground and what procedures should be adopted for moving forward with the camping ground operation.

“We’ve had several positive discussions with the State Government about the expansion, and what that could look like in terms of additional sites and infrastructure such as public toilets,” the Mayor said.  “We’re confident that a complete Master Plan for the area will provide the framework needed to ensure sustainable, equitable management of the site into the future.”

Recruitment of a consultant to coordinate the Macquarie Heads Camping Ground Expansion Project, is currently underway.  The project will involve development of a full business plan for the potential expansion of the existing camping ground, preparation of a Development Project Plan and management of any expansion works following granting of appropriate approvals.
