Council calls for vandalism help

24 November 2015

The West Coast Council is calling on the community to help catch vandals.

Several trees along the Esplanade in Strahan, between the slip yard and piners punt, have been vandalised recently. Some trees have been cut down whilst other large mature trees have been poisoned.  These actions are criminal offences.

“This malicious vandalism has the potential to cause a number of issues including erosion and potential damage to community infrastructure,” General Manager Dirk Dowling said.

“Removal and poisoning native vegetation will have a long term impact on the natural diversity of the area. Our community must work together to ensure our natural assets are valued and protected,” Mr. Dowling stated.

Council is also looking to install surveillance equipment to monitor the area.

Vandalism costs the community money and Council is asking anyone who may have seen the vandalism being carried out to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or West Coast Council on 6471 4700.

Council is working closely with Tasmania Police and Crown Land Services and will prosecute offenders were possible.
