Renewable energy future looking bright for Tasmania

The shift in Australia’s energy market towards more renewables is creating significant opportunity for Tasmania to play a leading role - delivering clean, affordable energy for our state and the nation, and generating development and employment opportunities for Tasmania.

Energy storage systems like pumped hydro will be important in the future as Australia sources more energy from renewables like wind and solar. Pumped hydro helps balance the variable generation of wind and solar and can also store energy on a large scale to use in times of low production.

The West and North West of Tasmania are emerging as areas of high potential for future pumped hydro development, based on studies being done by Hydro Tasmania.

Under the Battery of the Nation initiative, Hydro Tasmania is looking at development options that can provide energy security for Tasmania, help give Tasmanians access to the lowest possible power prices and deliver reliable, cost-effective clean energy to our state and the National Electricity Market.

It would also be good for Tasmania’s economy through increased investment, regional development and employment opportunities.

Pumped hydro energy storage is one of the keys to unlocking the state’s future potential. Hydro Tasmania’s initial assessment has shown significant potential for development in the West and North West of the state.

When realised, pumped hydro projects could double Tasmania’s current hydropower capacity and potentially generate up to $5 billion in investment and up to 3000 jobs.

Hydro Tasmania is committed to continuing to engage with the community, and invites you to share your views so that any concerns or opportunities can be better understood as the site assessment process progresses.
